Linda Jamieson School of Dance offers training in classical ballet for both recreational and pre-professional students. Dancers in second-year intermediate level or above in the pre-professional track may enroll in the repertoire class, which features variations from such full-length ballets as Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake.
One of the world's most well-known ballets, Swan Lake tells of the love between Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. The ballet begins on the prince's 21st birthday, when his mother reminds him of his obligation to choose a bride the following evening at the royal ball. In order to distract himself, Prince Siegfried ventures off by himself to hunt.
The prince sees a swan and takes aim with his birthday present, a fine crossbow. Before he can fire, however, the bird transforms into a beautiful young woman named Odette. She explains to the prince that an evil sorcerer has placed a spell on her, so that she must exist as a swan during daylight hours. The spell can only be broken if a virgin swears his loyalty to her and marries her.
At the ball the following evening, Prince Siegfried finds himself in the company of eligible princesses from across the world, though he can only think of Odette. The ball is then interrupted by two unexpected guests, the sorcerer Von Rothbart and his daughter Odile. Young Odile seduces Siegfried and wins his proposal of marriage and his promise of fidelity, both of which he offers before realizing von Rothbart's evil intentions.
Odette has witnessed the exchange. Siegfried runs out to find her by the lake, where she tells Siegfried that she must kill herself in order to avoid living forever as a swan. Siegfried vows to submit to death with her, and this vow breaks Von Rothbart's power over Odette.
When the sorcerer appears, the two throw themselves into the water, drowning. Von Rothbart is rendered powerless, and the two are reunited in the spiritual realm.
